Helping Humanitarian Aid Shipments to Ukraine

** In November 2022 we published this story about a brilliant humanitarian endeavour from Steve Hance and Alan Hilliar to help Ukraine. Well, the need in war-torn Ukraine hasn't stopped through the 2023, even though the events in Ukraine haven't featured on the media as much this year. Steve and Alan, have valiantly raised funds, collected aid and travelled to Ukraine 19(!) times throughout 2023, taking nearly 60 vehicle loads. Once again, we at Harbour Shipping would like to pay tribute to Steve Hance and Alan Hilliar for their activities in 2023 that have helped hundreds of men, women and children in Ukraine. One of the biggest stories and humanitarian crises of 2022 was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

When the invasion pushed into Ukrainian towns and cities from February, huge numbers of innocent people left their ordinary lives and homes for uncertain futures. Millions of people needed help… and fast.

When charities and ordinary people mobilised around the UK to gather aid and send it to Ukraine, suddenly there was an urgent need to smooth their journeys. Harbour Shipping pulled out all the stops, with customs specialist Elliot Berry and others helping the volunteers who just wanted to drive aid to Ukraine as quickly as possible. Elliot explains,

“Representatives from two charities in East Anglia contacted us about Ukraine shipments in the Spring. We'd already helped Steve Hance the Transport Manager from TEECH with previous aid to Eastern Europe. Alan Hilliar from Felsted Aid for Deprived Children was new. The government had simplified the procedures but we still needed to do the necessary paperwork and get them on their way.”

“After all the volunteers had done in raising the money and getting everything sorted to travel we wanted to play our part in helping them go out and get the aid to deserving people as quickly as possible. It meant working with Steve and Alan to get their paperwork up to professional standards.”

“So far we’ve assisted these guys in moving a dozen truckloads of aid and I’m very happy to help. They've done brilliantly!”
