Operation Brock in Kent

Latest Update: Thursday 5th January 2023

Current status of Operation Brock: Clear!

Kent Resilience Forum announced officially that Operation Brock will be removed from the M20 motorway in Kent during the weekend 7th/8th January 2023 so traffic will run normally from Monday 9th January until further notice. Operation Brock contraflow restrictions were reintroduced in mid-December ahead of the expected Christmas holiday getaway.

About Operation Brock

Bad weather, strikes, security alerts or just plain traffic congestion. Whatever the reason, the standard traffic management process in Kent is called Operation Brock. If you travel towards the Kent ports of Eurotunnel and Dover, particularly as a freight operator, you should know the name.

Freight traffic heading to any of the coastal transport locations such as Ashford Sevington, Dover and Eurotunnel is channelled into segregated lanes of the M20 motorway for about 20 miles between Maidstone and Ashford. A subsidiary operation called Dover Tap controls entry into Dover town and the port. There are also controls on the A256.

Operation Brock aims to avoid gridlock and travel chaos involving thousands of trucks spilling onto suburban and residential streets around Dover and Folkestone, as has happened in previous years. It is also designed to improve welfare facilities for freight drivers stuck in Kent through no fault of their own.
